The Lost and Lonesome Recording Co.

The Lost and Lonesome Recording Co.

Lost & Lonesome Recording Co. is an independent record label based in Melbourne, Australia. The label specialises in indie pop, and has released both recordings by local artists and local releases by overseas indie bands.

Francis Plagne is a Melbourne-based musician and songwriter whose work moves between popular and experimental music forms. His music has been described as sounding as ‘close to Pet Sounds era Beach Boys as it does a musique concrète future classic’ (Mess + Noise) and as the ‘unlikely amalgam of Antonio Carlos Jobim's samba and an Andre Breton poem’ (ThreeThousand). The Wire’s Jon Dale described his work as slotting ‘into a trajectory of experimental song/sound art crossover that stretched from Caetano Veloso’s ‘Araca Azul’ through to Broadcast’.

On Friday, October 28, at Bella Union, Francis will launch his new album, Tenth Volume of Maps (released through Lost and Lonesome on October 7). The album is his first to be recorded in a professional  studio and features appearances from the musicians who will accompany him in concert: long-time collaborators Connal Parsley on bass, Judith Hamann on cello, James Rushford on viola and Joe Talia on drums, with a special appearance from expatriate songsmith Ned Collette on guitar.

Sean Baxter is an Australian improviser who has forged an international reputation as a bold explorer of percussive possibilities both as a  soloist, collaborator, and through his work with the acclaimed  Pateras/Baxter/Brown trio.

Focusing on the use of extended techniques applied to the conventional drumkit, he utilises an arsenal of metallic junk and other percussive  detritus to expand the sonic palette of the percussion tradition.
